Back on the Road

After spending 2 days at Diani beach I now had to make my way back to NairobI, hopefully to pick up my Sat Nav.

It was an earlier start today as I had to cross into Mombasa on the ferry which I was informed gets very busy in the morning. But having left at 8.30am the traffic down to the ferry was already horrendous In fact yet again no one wanted to give way, so the cars coming off the ferry could not go anywhere because of the queue of traffic trying to get on the ferry via the same narrow road. It was total gridlock! It ended up taking 2 hrs to get across on the ferry and to the outskirts of Mombasa. And then the main exit roads out of Mombasa were diverted to roads that were only really suitable for 4x4’s. The detour signs were so poorly placed that it seemed at times like I was going the wrong way up a one way street with cars and trucks heading towards me having to take evasive action onto the pavement.....it was in interesting morning ride.

Once out of Mombasa it was back to the long straight roads and they seem to go on forever.

Eventually I would travel through a village or two, bustling with life but all in fairly poor conditions.

After about five hours in the saddle I had made it about half way to Nairobi. It was now almost 3pm and time to stop so decided to revisit Maneaters lodge for an overnight stay before heading out early tomorrow morning. This time I thought I would stop to take a photo of the track I had to take up to the lodge from the Mombasa Road. The track continued for a couple of kilometers deeper and deeper into the bush and I have to say, I have never taken a picture so quickly before riding off a break neck speed for fear of being attacked by something with claws and teeth!

What an amazing start to your journey. Here I am sitting in the hospice & I feel from the heart that you are out there doing it not just for you, which is wonderful in itself, but also showing those of us less fortunate with their health or circumstances what a wonderful world this is & how worth fighting for. Go Ashley & enjoy living & breathing every second of this experience. X

Have you checked your nuts after your impromptu maintenance the other day and your recent wobbly ride up that dirt track to Maneaters!?! 🙄

Reading your story is better than anything on TV.😂 It really is so interesting , but do be careful on that daunting ride back to Nairobi.

Enjoying the updates. Actually found myself enjoying the journey to work after recalling the 'roads' that you're having to ride around on! Keep safe and the tank topped up. Hope you get re-united to TomTom soon, keep your glasses on some string and your marbles somewhere safe too.
